Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the latter part of this project we have concentrated on investigating some fundamental questions that have appeared in the course of the work. In the paper published in Acta Mechanica (2019) we have clarified analytically the effect of vortex shedding on the stability of a flapping flag (modelled as a plate). We have shown that vortex shedding decreases the critical flow speed, i.e., the speed where flutter is initiated. In a paper called “The stability of a doubly infinite vortex array” (submitted to “Theor. Comp. Fluid Mech.”) we consider a vortex array that corresponds to a large school of fish (or a large array of energy-harvesting flapping flags) swimming/vibrating in phase. We show (prove mathematically), as a new, fundamental result, that such a layout is always unstable.
