Outline of Annual Research Achievements

We are progressing according to the plan in 2018, and achieved the following results.

We have proposed spatial coupled polar codes by associating multiple identical polar codes (base codes) with short length. We have investigated two spatial-coupling schemes. For the first spatial-coupling scheme, part of message bits of the polar code at each coupling position is used as frozen bits of the one-side adjacent polar code. For the second scheme, the multiple polar codes are associated by combining message-bit blocks of adjacent coupling positions with modulo-2 addition.

Simulation results show that, the two schemes of spatially coupled polar codes can provide better error-correcting performance, with a little extra iteration complexity, than original polar codes with short length. Specifically, when setting the coupling ratio at 0.33 and coupling pattern as Uncertain-Certain, the first spatial-coupling scheme provides the best decoding performance. The second one with coupling width 3 provides better performance than that with coupling width 2. Furthermore, the first spatial-coupling scheme with short message block length provides better decoding performance.

Reason

As summarize in the Research Achievements section, the research work is smoothly progressing according to the plan in 2018. Our proposed spatial coupled polar codes provides performance improvement of multiple short-packets transmission by associating these packets in the spatial coupling scheme.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Part of this research results in 2018 has been summarized and will be presented in international conferences in 2019 (the extension year).
