Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The number of death from lung cancer is increasing in Japan. We found in our preliminary study that lung cancer cells undergoing epithelial-mesenchymal transition express a unique membranous protrusion called primary cilium. In this project, we have identified a gene (here referred to as gene X) as a candidate factor promoting ciliogenesis in lung cancer cells. We have also found that the expression of primary cilium is tightly associated with cell proliferation etc. Since primary cilium is found in clinical lung cancer tissues, it may play siginificant roles in vivo. We will further address the functions of gene X using a genetically engineered mouse that is currently under construction.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
