Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In previous year we conducted microarray analysis with rice flowers impaired in biosynthesis of JA-Ile. We focused on two stages of flower development which accumulates large amounts of this hormone. In this year we continued characterization of differentially regulated genes focusing on potential regulators of flower morphogenesis. The expression of candidate genes was verified by quantitative RT-PCR. Two candidate genes (MADS-type, AP2-type) were selected for silencing and functional characterization. Embryonic rice callus was transformed via agrobacterium method and resistant shoots were selected on regeneration media. Shots were transferred to soil and 30 transgenic lines for each gene were cultivated for seed production. Silencing level was examined in each line and the best lines are now used to study the effect of selected genes on jasmonate-controlled flower development. In parallel, we continued to study function of jasmonate in defense which is necessary to understand its complex dual role in growth and defense.
