Outline of Final Research Achievements

Erythropoietin (EPO) has been used as an erythropoietic stimulant, and it is also shows tissue-protective and regenerative effects. We synthesized a hybrid molecule of EPO ; heparin affinity erythropoietin (HEPO), and studied the biological characteristics of this novel EPO derivative. Human HEPO (rhHEPO) shows not only long-acting erythropoietic activity, but also antiangiogenic effect. This novel EPO derivative (HEPO) may have advantages to act on thrombosis and hemostasis, in addition to tissue-protective and anti-tumor effects.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
