Outline of Final Research Achievements

Through analyzing textbooks of English academic writing (EAW) and conducting survey on their application to English classes in ESL countries and areas (e.g., Hong Kong, Malaysia), the researcher came to the conclusion that the English learning support system practiced at universities in ESL areas and countries would be of great help to improve college students' ability for academic writing in Japan. Besides, other findings from self-learning centers at universities in EFL countries gave important suggestions to our reformation of curricula for English academic writing.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究を通して、準英語圏・非英語圏におけるアカデミックライティングを中心とした学習支援の実態を明らかにした。その結果、わが国の大学レベルの英語教育において、学生のライティング能力、特にアカデミックライティング能力の向上には、サポートセンターやワークショップなどの授業外の支援が必要であり、その方法と期待される効果について、特に香港の大学の調査から大きな示唆を得た。それは、英語圏の大学で行われているwriting centerといった実践よりも有効であることが分かった。
