Outline of Final Research Achievements

In Sub-Saharan Africa, we developed tests which can measure basic skills. We　selected Ghana (High level), Ethiopia (Middle level) and Malawi (Low level) as a sample. We used achievement test and questionnaire. Achievement test consists of local language, English, mathematics and life skills. There are 10 items in Each subject. The questionnaire consists of individual and family background factors. The test and questionnaire were administered to from grades 4 to 7 students. In total, we collected data from 4783 students.
In analysis, using item response theory (IRT), we conducted basic analysis, estimated item difficulties and item discriminations, and estimated differential item functioning (DIF). We found that some items are problems, however, the aim of the study was achieved.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

サブサハラ・アフリカ地域において、基礎学力の定着は非常に低く、大きな課題となっている。基礎学力を定着させるためには、まず、正確に基礎学力を測定する必要がある。しかし、この地域における基礎学力を測定することができるテストは非常に少ない。また、存在しても問題項目が公表されていないため、どのような点が弱点であるかなど解答の特徴は明らかにされていない。
先進国と同じ理論を用いてテスト開発したことによって、途上国においても現状に合わせた生徒の基礎学力の習得するための評価方法の開発に貢献をした。また、サブサハラ・アフリカ地域における学力の向上に貢献した。
