Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This study aimed to evaluate acceptance of HPV vaccine in Japanese parents with adolescent daughters living in the UK or Australia. Enlisting the help of Japanese schools in each country proved difficult. Instead e-mail exchanges took place with 5 sets of parents, 2 in the UK, 2 in Australia and 1 who had just returned from the UK to Japan. Three of the mothers and 3 of the fathers in 4 sets of parents had a biomedical background. One set had neither. Girls living in Australia were vaccinated, while neither of the girls that had lived or were living in the UK were vaccinated. The deciding factor in all cases was whether the mother thought vaccination was safe or not, regardless of the wishes of the father. Funding from the UK Sasagawa foundation has been obtained to continue the study.
