Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We hypothesized that swallowing dynamics are modified by underlying pathophysiology of dysphagic patients and such alterations of swallowing dynamics determine the appropriate food properties. but, We could not show a criterion of causal relationships. The data obtained so far are reflected on the swallowing monitor - and an algorithm for improving accuracy has been developed. Impaired coordination between breathing and swallowing (breathing-swallowing discoordination) may be a significant risk factor for the exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We examined breathing-swallowing discoordination in patients with COPD using a non-invasive and quantitative technique and determined its association with COPD exacerbation.Breathing-swallowing discoordination is strongly associated with frequent exacerbations of COPD.
