平成30年度は、近接未来を指す表現間に見られた競合関係に着目し、初期近代英語のテキストを集めたWebコーパスEEBO Corpusからのデータを利用して研究を進めた。ひとつは、同一表現の異形間の関係である。Be on/upon the point of doingについて、この表現はフランス語etre sur le point deからの翻訳借用であるとされるが、初期近代英語では複数の異形が存在していた。そのような異形の関係性について、16世紀初頭まではin point to do、16世紀はat the point to do、17世紀からはupon the point of doingと、時代ごとに代表的な形が入れ替わることを示した。また、of doingで終わる形式になった背景には、複合前置詞の拡大が関わっている可能性を提示した。もうひとつは、be about to, be upon the point of, be ready toの関係である。これらのうち、前者2つが文法化した表現として残ったのに対し、最後がそうならなかった背景を検討した。Be about toとbe upon the point ofに関しては、意味的にも形式的にも近接未来を指す表現として安定していた（あるいは順調に発達していた）が、be ready toには、近接未来用法とともに、readyの形容詞的用法が時代を通じて色濃く残っていた。この違いが両者の命運を分けた可能性を提示した。
