| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This study examines two parent-child pairs who speak different languages to each other. Data analysis on the first pair has been completed. The results show that the child spoke Japanese because the English-speaking father never prompted her to do speak English but moved on with the conversation.A paper based on these findings is currently under review in a domestic peer-reviewed journal. The results were also presented orally at the International Conference on Language Acquisition at the University of the Balearic Islands on 9th September 2016.
Data analysis on the second pair in this study is under progress. The second pair involves an Italian-speaking father and his child. Results from the data from both pairs has been accepted as an oral presentation at the International Symposium on Monolingual and Bilingual Speech in Greece in September 2017.They will show how use of different parental discourse strategies leads to dilingual interaction and passive bilingualism in children.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Data transcription,coding and analysis for the first two subjects of the study have been completed. The results have been summarized into a research paper, which is now under review by a domestic journal.
Data collection for the next two subjects of the study, an Italian father and his child,is completed, and 60% of the data have been transcribed and coded. The remaining data is scheduled to be transcribed and coded by August 2017. The research assistant who has been doing the transcription has been able to meet her deadlines and should be able to complete the transcription on the remaining files by the scheduled time.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Data transcription and coding for the second pair of subjects is scheduled to be completed by Aug 2017. The combined data from the first and second pairs will be analyzed and presented orally at the International Symposium on Monolingual and Bilingual Speechin Greece in September 2017.
The study would be improved based on feedback from the conference, and by doing further analysis using different methodological tools, namely conversation analysis.The paper will then be submitted to an international journal for review by March 2018.

| Causes of Carryover |
Travel expenses to attend a conference in Spain was lower than budgeted. Airfare was cheaper due to use of a foreign carrier (Air China).Data transcription in Italian-Japanese is still ongoing so transcription costs need to be incurred in the following year.

| Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
The grant will be used to pay the research assistant for transcribing Italian-Japanese data. The grant will also be used to pay for conference travel to Greece, and miscellaneous items such as books and computer equipment.
