Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Research was conducted in Hong Kong at the Universities Service Centre for China Studies to collect data on elite recruitment policies. It concentrated on the review of periodicals dedicated to cadre recruitment in China. Locally and centrally published journals (period 1992-2010) provided data on the selection and development of state public servants and party officials (original party documents or state institutions, or related analyses). Analysis of the data in this period focused on understanding how the expertise of the SOE managers was utilized for strengthening state capacity of specific government institutions. Research progress has been presented at an international workshop and is due to be published as a book chapter with an international publisher at the end of the year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The most immediate task is the editing and finalizing the book chapter to be published in an edited volume with an international publisher. Further, the large amount of data collected so far needs to be analyzed and organized into publications. The research this year is to be focused on the party-state relations with SOEs at the local level as opposed to central government level, which the analysis so far has concentrated on.

Causes of Carryover |
Implementation of all the research project has been postponed for one year due to personal circumstances.
