Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY 2016, I and research collaborator Ms. Yoko Oishi (Ph.D. student, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies) collected relevant firm level micro-data and performed analyses. We found out meaningful results about the impact of trade liberalization on firm's demand for female workers. This paper utilizes both reduction in output tariff and intermediate tariff to examine the two different channels of trade liberalization on female employment: competition and technology. We found out that increased domestic competition caused by reduction in output tariff has limited impact on demand for female workers. Our finding is different from Becker's conjecture that competition drives out costly discrimination. We also found out significantly negative effect of decreased input tariff on female employment of firms utilizing imported material. Our results imply that imported technology decreases demand for female workers as their skill is on average lower than that of male workers. Our research provides important policy implication that educational equality should be achieved to ensure gender equality in labor market in the era of globalization.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We acquired expected results so our progress is rather smooth. It is because we received good comments and feedback from colleagues and conference from early stage of our work.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We do not have any problem so far. In FY2017, we plan to produce working paper and disseminate our results in international conferences. Then we also plan to submit our work to internationally peer-reviewed journal.
|
Causes of Carryover |
We put aside some amount to purchase extra data depending on results from our research.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
We will purchase extra data and equipment to facilitate our research. We will also participate in international conferences to disseminate our results and receive good feedbacks.
