Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We started to present our findings academic conferences and started to revise and refine our paper according to feedbacks we received. We presented our paper at two relevant international conferences:International Association for Feminist Economics Annual Meeting and Singapore Economic Review Conference. We received useful comments about our paper and started revision and refinement using extended data sets. Our research aims to answer how trade affects inequality between male and female workers in Indonesia, one of the developing countries with largest labor market.Trade liberalization usually decreases import tariffs and thereby increase domestic competition among firms who produce the same outputs. However, reduction in import tariffs also affects firms who utilize imported materials. Reduction in tariffs on those intermediate goods encourage importing firms to increase imports of such intermediate goods embedded with higher level of technology. We found out that reduction in both output tariffs and input tariffs negatively affects firms’ demand for women workers.10% decrease in output tariff would decrease women’s employment share around 1.1% points while 10% reduction in input tariffs declines women’s employment share by 1.1%-4.4% point across various specifications. Our results show that both competition and imported technology has adverse effects on women workers who are on average low-skilled compared to their male counterparts. Also, our results are robust to controlling macro-economic shock, alternative tariff measures, minimum wage, and other firm characteristics.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We extended our sample period and updated our data. We also constructed alternative measures of trade liberalization. The data work was more than what we had expected. However, we already finished all the data work and acquired more robust results.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will complete our revision and writing within May, 2018. Then we will submit our manuscript to first target journal. We will also publish our results as a working paper to easily disseminate our findings to the society.
