Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY 2018, we completed our research using comprehensive firm level micro-data from Indonesia. This paper utilized both reduction in output tariffs and input tariffs in Indonesia to examine the two different channels of trade liberalization on female employment: domestic competition and technology.
We found out that increased domestic competition caused by a reduction in output tariffs has large impact on women employment while a reduction in input tariffs significantly decreases female employment of firms utilizing imported material. Our analyses demonstrate that lower input tariffs decrease firms’ export activity and encourage their skill upgrading. We further find out that output tariffs encourage women’s employment only among non-exporting firms in heavy industry.
