Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This project exploits a natural experiment in the establishment of China's economic zones which targeted firms. By focusing on a prominent place-based policy in China, the study has addressed whether or not zones work, for whom, and also what works and where. It does so by constructing a data set with detailed geo-coded information on firms with relatively fine granularity. A primary contribution of this work is that it has provided some of the first compelling evidence on the local and aggregate effects of zones with welfare implications, along with the determinants of program effectiveness in China. Given the large number of developing countries implementing similar zone programs, the findings have important implications for policy and the design of more effective SEZs.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I have published three papers in top field journals including Journal of International Economics, Journal of Development Economics, and Journal of Comparative Economics. I have also submitted the paper on China's special economic zones to an international journal and received a revise-and-resubmit request from the journal editor.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I would like to revise the paper on special economic zones and submit it to a journal. Meanwhile, I will actively attend seminars and conferences to present the paper and get feedbacks from researchers.
|
Causes of Carryover |
I did not use editoral proofreading service (Personnel Expenditure and Remuneration) in this fiscal year. In the next fiscal year, I plan to revise and resubmit the paper to an international journal and use the editoral service.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
I would like to use the editoral editing service in the next fiscal year.
