Outline of Annual Research Achievements

As mentioned in the research plan for FY2016, this research focuses on examining the pattern of nonlinear intergenerational mobility, and establishing a theoretical framework in order to explain the nonlinear intergenerational mobility.
In order to examine the pattern, data about the Social Stratification and Social Mobility in Japan is collected through the Social Science Japan Data Archive by Center for Social Research and Data Archives. However, some information which is necessary to this research is found to be missing.
In order to theoretically analyze the framework of intergenerational mobility, the model of parenting practice is built, since it is well known that people’s income level is positively associated with their human capital. And meanwhile, in the process of human capital formation, child-rearing practice of parents plays an important role, for it is a fundamental factor in forming children’s preference, and further affects their development and achievement. Many studies empirically show that socio-economic status influences parents’ parenting styles, and via different parenting styles parents’ socio-economic characteristics have impact on their children’s development outcomes. In this context, this theoretical model contributes to explaining the pattern of intergenerational mobility. The research paper which summarizes the theoretical results is accepted and published by International Review of Economics.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

As mentioned above, for the empirical part of this research, data is collected from SSJDA. However, some necessary information is incomplete. Further data search is needed.
For the theoretical part, based on the suggestions of two anonymous referees, the paper is revised and published in the international academic journal International Review of Economics.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In FY2017, first, this research will continue to collect relevant data about intergenerational mobility and find whether it can be used here. Second, this research will confirm the consistency of the theoretical model with the empirical results from Japan. Investigating the policy effects on improving intergenerational mobility is also considered.

Causes of Carryover

After the inquiry at Center for Social Research and Data Archives and the application procedure, the data can be downloaded from Social Science Japan Data Archive online. Hence the travel expenses for collecting data are saved. After revision, the paper is accepted by the journal and therefore the submission fees, English proofreading charges and etc. are also saved.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

In FY2017, research funds will be used for purchasing material and supplies (including a printer and toners), books, traveling and other objectives.
