Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In FY2017, I completed the global mapping of convergent scientific research, which included the processing of 1.5 million publications and 24,000 clusters across all fields of science. Building on this map, I selected three cases of highly convergent life science domains to examine their patterns of innovation: (a) the study of the factors influencing the evolution of emerging iPS cell-based therapies, (b) the examination of the evolution and patterns of collaboration in next-generation cancer immunotherapies, and (c) the assessment of convergence in Japan's WPI research centers. For these cases, we used a mixed-methods approach that includes scientific, technological and clinical data. Different domestic and international collaborations were built to conduct this research. Main outputs of this research are two manuscripts that are currently under review and will be added to this grant once they are accepted.

A career change to a Kyoto University biotech spin-off in FY2017 impeded me to continue with my Kakenhi funding. However, my current affiliation at Kyoto University as an external research fellow will allow me to finalize the research plans of this project and to continue with the preparation of two additional manuscripts to be published in international journal publications. Owing to these changes, I was not able to attend international conferences, as planned.
