Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The objective of the study is to examine innovation diffusion as a contested process. I am currently using the case of genetically modified organisms or biotech crops. In order to achieve my research objective, I have conducted the following in FY 2016: 1.Reviewed the literature on innovation diffusion with focus on the contestation process; 2.Identified those countries that have planted biotech crops on a trial basis and have adopted biotech crops for planting. It was evident that some countries planted on a trial basis and yet they still don’t allow the planting of biotech crops, including Italy, Japan, and New Zealand. On other hand, there are countries that have been planting biotech crops before (trial basis) and after commercialization and are still being questioned by the media, consumers, and other stakeholders. In FY 2017, I will identify countries that I will focus on for empirical analysis; 3. Familiarized myself with computer aided text analysis techniques and attended conference sessions that focused on research using content or text analysis; 4.Presented a paper that addresses the role of political freedom, measured by civil liberty index which signifies media penetration and freedom of the press and of speech and consumers’ media literacy. This factor is crucial for analyzing the forces that drive the contested process of innovation diffusion.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

My research project is mostly progressing as expected. During my first year of the project, I was able to do the groundwork:literature review and structuring data collection and analysis.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In FY 2017, I will focus on collecting country-level data. This process will start from developing rationale for choosing countries that will be used for empirical analysis. Print media data on these countries will then be collected. Following previous studies, I will source my data from a national publication with a high circulation that was published daily and had high journalistic standards. While collecting data, I will start to draft my paper within the year of 2017.

Causes of Carryover

I spent less than what I originally planned. In order to focus on literature review and secondary data collection, I moved my field study to next year.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

I will use the money to conduct my field study.
