| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Due to being pregnant and giving birth on July 26, 2016, I had to adjust my research plan for the fiscal year 2016. As travelling was difficult, I was not able to participate in all (but most) conferences as planned. I was also not able to travel freely for several days at a time, in order to start with my qualitative fieldwork as intended.
Instead, I concentrated on my second goal for 2016, continuing secondary analysis of available quantitative data sets to further analyse the interrelations of social and subjective well-being. As result, I was able to publish several papers, an edited volume, as well as prepare another paper to be submitted for review.
In preparation of the qualitative part of my project, I met with several collaboration partners in Germany in Dec 2016/Jan 2017.

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to being pregnant and giving birth on July 26th, 2016, I was not able to start my research as planned.I took three months of maternity leave (one month before and 8 weeks after the birth), but also before this and after returning to work, I was not able to work as I had laid out in my research proposal.
Towards the end of my pregnancy and in the first months after the birth of my baby, I was not able to travel easily, so I could not participate in all of the conferences I had intended.It was also difficult to start with fieldwork with a small baby, even after my return to work, as I am breastfeeding and my daily schedule is not flexible yet.
However, I am confident to be able to pick up the pace and proceed with my research as planned from this fiscal year.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For 2017, I plan to start with the qualitative part of my research project.
I am currently preparing the questionnaire for first test interviews to be carried out in Tokyo in May 2017. Based on this pretest, I will adjust my interview strategy where necessary and start the interview phase in Japan.
In August and December 2017, I will travel to Germany to carry out fieldwork (pretest and qualitative interviews) there.
In addition to this, I intend to continue working on publications and presentations of my quantiative analyses, both in Japan as well as abroad.

| Causes of Carryover |
As I was not able to start my fieldwork as intended in 2016 due to my pregnancy, I plan to to travel within Japan, as well as to Germany for my fieldwork more frequently and for longer periods of time than initially intended for 2017.

| Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
In 2017, I plan to travel to Germany at least twice for fieldwork. In addition, I intend to present at several domestic, as well as international conferences. The budget for 2017 will, therefore, mainly be used for travel cost for fieldwork and conferences, as well as for incentives for my interview partners.In addition, part of the budget will be used to pay for transcriptions of the interviews and proofreading of English and Japanese articles.
