Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In 2017, I started fieldwork in Japan, managing to acquire semi-structured in-depth interviews with 57 Japanese in their 20s. 45 of these interviews were carried by students of my class on research methods. They carried out the interviews in their hometowns over the summer break. As a result, my sample includes young Japanese from all over Japan. First results are published in the report “現代日本の若い世代の人生評価に関するインタビュー調査“. I presented results at different conferences.
Jun Kobayashi and I published an article on determinants of happiness and unhappiness in a peer-review journal. We also presented our research at several national and international conferences.
In preparation of the qualitative part of my project in Germany, I met with several collaboration partners in Germany.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to giving birth on July 26th, 2016, I was not able to start my research as planned in the first year (2016). In the second year (2017), I have been able to pick up the pace and have carried out qualitative interviews in Japan as planned.
Traveling abroad for longer time spans is still difficult with two small children, so I have not been able to carry out interviews in Germany yet, but I am confident that I will be able to start my fieldwork in Germany and to be able attend all conferences I applied for in 2018.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In 2018, I intend to focus on my fieldwork, in Germany, interviewing German youth in their 20s. I plan to write a first article based on the results of my qualitative interviews with Japanese youth, and to submit it to a peer-reviewed journal. I was also invited to write a chapter on young Japanese's well-being in a book on Japanese youth edited by Toru Kikkawa and Ryotaru Hazama of Osaka University. In addition to this, I will give several conference presentations on my project both at international and national conferences.

Causes of Carryover |
I intend to use the money that is left from fiscal year 2017 for my fieldwork in Germany in 2018.
