Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
My increased workload and my two children prevented me from carrying out qualitative interviews in Germany. In summer and winter 2018, I met with several collaboration partners in Germany to think about other approached. Two strategies emerged. With Prof. Wolfgang Jagodzinski (and others), Cologne University, Germany, and Prof. Kazufumi Manabe, Aoyama Gakuin University, we carried out a student survey (Germany = 500, Japan = 500) to investigate the interrelation of social values and SWB.With Dr. Christina Sagioglou, Innsbruck University, Austria, I prepared a three-country online survey (US, Germany, Japan), to investigate the relationship between objective and subjective social status with SWB, with relative deprivation as a possible mediator. We are ready to field the survey in 2019.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to being pregnant and giving birth on July 26th, 2016, I was not able to start my research as planned in the first year. In the second year, I have been able to pick up the speed and have carried qualitative interviews in Japan as planned. Travelling for longer time spans is still difficult with two small children. Therefore, I have not been able to carry out qualitative interviews in Germany as initially intended. In order to still be able to deliver a comparison of subjective and social well-being in Eastern and Western context, I have decided to shift the methodological focus of my study as outlined above and below.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In 2019, I intend to field the online survey (US, Germany, Japan) outlined above and analyse the results. In addition to this, I will analyse the results of the student survey carried out in Japan and Germany in November 2018. I plan to finish a chapter on the results of my qualitative interviews with Japanese youth, as well as write another chapter on how SWB has changed in Japan over the past thirty years.

Causes of Carryover |
I intend to use the money left from 2018 to pay for my online survey in 2019.
