Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year, we submitted a research paper (Tasker is first author) for imputing planet properties using a neural network (paper currently under review). This method successfully predicts the mass of exoplanets (within a factor of two) given the orbital period, equilibrium temperature, number of planets in the system, stellar mass and either the radius or mass. With my student, I have also been working on hydrodynamical models for planet migration. These simulations consider the motion of a planet through a slightly unstable disc. The models are now working with the code ChaNGa and we are exploring the parameter space to see where the disc becomes unstable.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Our main paper is currently under review and a second paper on the same topic is being developed. (Our first paper was ultimately rejected by Nature Astronomy on the grounds of "not sufficiently novel for the journal". Since we met all other requests from the reviewer reports, we hope that this paper will now we swiftly accepted in Monthly Notices: another internationally ranked journal.)
The simulations are also progressing and we hope to be drafting the paper within the month.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
By the end of this grant (next year):
1. One first author paper in print (Planned Journal: MNRAS) 2. One second author paper (with first author being my student) in print / in-press (Planned Journal: MNRAS) 3. One first author paper on a teaching & outreach tool for planet formation in print. 4. Two other papers in preparation.

Causes of Carryover |
Due to needing to go on a research trip at the beginning of April for this work, a small amount of last year's budget was saved to be used at the start of the next fiscal year.
