Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では、数10MeVに至る高エネルギー粒子加速を駆動する、木星磁気圏の自励的な電磁エネルギーの解放と輸送過程の解明を最終目的とする。研究代表者は、惑星分光観測衛星「ひさき」とハッブル宇宙望遠鏡による連携観測を初めて実施し、木星の高速自転と衛星イオのプラズマ供給が自励的に駆動する、内部駆動型の突発的オーロラ加速を発見した。

本研究では、2016年に観測開始した木星極域探査機Junoを新たに加え、世界初の遠隔-極域その場同時連携観測から、内部駆動型の粒子加速で鍵となる①自励的エネルギー解放と、②木星近傍へのエネルギー輸送過程を解明し、内部駆動形粒子加速の存在を実証する。

実施計画に則り、平成29度は、2016年5月から8月に実施した、ひさき-ハッブル宇宙望遠鏡-Juno探査機の三者連携観測のデータを統合し、オーロラの時空間発展を網羅的に観測することで、問題の解明に取り組んだ。その結果、内部駆動形エネルギー解放に対応する、突発オーロラの開始時刻において、比較的高緯度のオーロラ構造が急速に拡大発展していることを発見した。その20時間後、高緯度のオーロラは消失し、代わりに低緯度帯にオーロラが出現した。これは、木星磁場を介してオーロラと結合する磁気圏において、エネルギー解放・輸送が、木星の遠方から木星近傍に急速に発展した事を意味する。発展の位置・速度などを観測から見積もることに成功し、解放・輸送過程を制約しうる本質的情報を得ることが出来た。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

今後は、2016年8月以降に実施している、ひさきと、Junoの極域その場観測データを緊密に連携させ、今年度までの研究で示唆してきた、磁気圏におけるエネルギー解放・輸送の素過程を捉え、解放・輸送の物理シナリオの全容を明らかにしていく予定である。

国際学会における成果発表旅費や、その他海外打ち合わせ用の旅費について、他研究プロジェクト等による、競争的旅費を獲得することが出来たため。次年度使用額は、平成30年度の国際学会成果発表旅費や、その他海外打ち合わせ旅費として使用する。
