Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Much of my work over the last year has focused on the behavior of carbon and hydrocarbon samples at high temperatures and pressures, corresponding to conditions with the warm dense matter regime. At SACLA, we carried out two experiments, the first looking at shock compressed carbon, and the second using the two-colour capabilities of SACLA to heat and probe a variety of samples. The first was unsuccessful, due to problems with the new long pulse laser. The second successfully demonstrated direct, X-ray driven isochoric sample heating, and observed the temperature evolution using diffraction. In an upcoming experiment later this year, we will use a smaller focus spot, with an intensity high enough to drive non-thermal melting of diamond and graphite.

My experiments outside of Japan have focused on hydrocarbons using shock compression, with beamtimes at PHELIX and LCLS, where I was co-PI. These build on results from a 2015 experiment where the formation of diamonds from shock-compressed CH was observed; a second paper on results from this beamtime, with myself as first author, has just been submitted. Another is expected later this year as part of the proceedings for the HEDLA conference in Kurashiki, at which I have an invited talk.
