Does mild exercise prevent an age-related brain atrophy and decreased function in the hippocampus?

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では、海馬下位領域の構造や機能的な変化をより詳細に解析可能であるイメージングする手法と海馬歯状回特異的認知機能であるパターン分離課題を導入し、低強度運動が高齢者の認知機能改善に有効であるかとその脳内機構解明を目指す。3年計画の3年目である平成30年度は実験③を実施した。
実験③では、短期間の低強度運動介入は健常高齢者の海馬可塑性を高めるかを明らかにすることを目的とした。まず、被験者は地域情報紙などの媒体に通じて被験者を募集し、MMSEやGDSなどの質問紙のスクリーニングにより精神・神経系の疾患に罹っておらず、運動習慣のない49名の健常高齢者を集めた。介入前に、有酸素性運動能力や海馬下位領域(海馬歯状回とCA3, CA1, SUB )の体積を測定した。運動介入には、参加同意を得た17名が参加した。介入期間は、6週間とし、被験者は、週3回、運動教室に来室させ、30分間の自転車運動を行なった。運動強度は、個人の最高酸素摂取量の35%の運動負荷とした。運動終了後には、ポスト測定を行い、低強度運動介入による海馬の構造的な変化を検討した。加齢により有酸素性運動能力が有意に減少し、側頭葉の他の領域に比べ、海馬歯状回とCA3の特異的な萎縮がみられていることを確認したが、6週間の低強度運動介入後、海馬歯状回とCA3の体積(Volume)が介入前に比べ有意に増加していることが明らかになった。
これらの結果は、定期的に行う軽い運動は、加齢による海馬歯状回の特異的な萎縮を防ぐ改善効果をもたらす可能性を示唆する。
