Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In 2017, a participatory vulnerability and capacity assessment to climate change have been conducted as planned. The study aimed at identifying the climate factors that are important to pastoralists' livelihoods and pastoralists' knowledge on their variability and their capacity to adapt or mitigate. The study area of this research is located in the Middle Belt which stretches across central Nigeria longitudinally between the 8th and the 12th parallels north. With the Sahel region in the north becoming drier under the influence of climate change, a large population of new pastoral Fulani groups has begun to infiltrate and settle into the region since couple of decades ago. Fieldwork was conducted this year to gather data on pastoralists' livelihoods and climate change impacts on them.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Despite the unstable working environment of the researcher, a fieldwork of three weeks long has been conducted successfully in Nigeria in year 2017. A questionnaire has been designed and tested, enumerators have been trained and arrangements have been made for interview to be carried out in the rainy season in 2017 and the dry season in 2018. Arrangements have also been made with pastoralists for detailed daily record of herding activities and cattle management. Meteorological data have been collected. In year 2017, the researcher has conducted three presentations in academic conferences held in Japan, Switzerland, and Taiwan, with two full papers being submitted to the two international conferences. A research paper has also been published in international academic journal.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
A follow up fieldwork in Nigeria is being planned for year 2018. The main purpose of the fieldwork would be to collect the questionnaires and daily records done and to cross check the reliability of the results. Detailed interview with the main pastoralist groups would be needed to get the narratives of climate change evidences and their adaptation strategies. Interview will also be conducted with local pastoralist leaders so as to assess the general impacts of climate change on pastoralist vulnerability and their interethnic relationship with the land holding communities. In 2018, articles for publications will be developed and submitted to reputable journals, and presentation will be conducted in academic institute in Nigeria and in international conferences.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Actual expenditure for 2016-2017 was largely smaller than planned because the researcher has changed workplace during this period and the fieldwork in Nigeria has been suspended. The exceeded amounts occurred in the last two years will be carried over to 2018-2019. The amount will be used for the travel expenses for the fieldwork to be conducted in Nigeria.
