Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
1) I largely automated the measurement so that it can now be operated by a single person instead of 3. The new system also guarantees precise synchronization of the data recorded by all instruments. 2) In collaboration with Capt. Uemura, I have developed a basic training syllabus that will be the basis for the experiments. 3) I adjusted the experiment protocol so it can be used for the PILOD project and received approval from the ethics committee. 4) In collaboration with Mr. Sekiguchi (a student), I have developed methods to evaluate pilot trainees based on objective data. Trainees are categorized depending on performance measures (e.g., glide slope deviation), control style (e.g., main control input frequency and strength), and pshychophysiological measures (e.g., heart rate, mental effort, change of pupil diameter, and eye movement speed). 5) I recorded data from 12 subjects, including 2 veterans, 1 private license & glider pilot/instructor, 1 more glider pilot, and 1 hang-glider pilot. 6) I developed and experimented with a variety of secondary tasks to measure the pilot (trainee)'s spare capacity and presented the results at an international conference.7) I introduced the PILOD project on several occasions and gained wide interest and I'm working on a collaboration agreement with an industrial partner now.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
No major changes in the planning are required, however gathering reference data from advanced and veteran pilots deserves continued attention in 2017. Although started in 2016, the majority of the experiments will be performed in 2017 and 2018. The main experiments will consist of 7 (or 5) blocks of ca. 2 (or 3) hours, with 2 participants per block and each block on a different day. In every block, control input data of least 2 landings will be measured.In the first, middle, and last block, psychophysiological data (eye motion & pupil, heart beat, brainwave data) will also be recorded.Some of the experiment participants (control group) will receive less or no feedback and follow a fixed curriculum.The others will be trained using the proposed PILOD method and receive detailed feedback and personalized training. At the end of 2017 all data and analysis results will be put together to evaluate the effectiveness of both the individual data analysis methods and the PILOD method.The methods will be adjusted if needed. 2018 will be used to implement the adjusted methods, hopefully together with an external partner in the pilot training industry. 2019 will be used for the final verification analysis and improving the user-friendliness of the software.

Causes of Carryover |
Money reserved for a research assistant and rewards for subjects were not used because of fewer than expected experiments with veteran pilots wore carried out.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
The experiments will hopefully be carried out this year, so there will be no large changes in the expected way of use (only slight delay). A small part may be used to buy additional measurement equipment so that we can prepare the next subject for the experiment while still operating the original experiment setup.
