Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the last year we analysed how Pam2Cys changes the immune system to protect against malaria parasites in the livers of mice. We found that: 1) Pam2Cys increased blood levels of cytokines, small proteins that effect other cells. It is possible that increased levels of cytokines are involved in killing malaria parasites in the liver. 2) Pam2Cys increased the numbers of Natural Killer (NK) T-cells in the livers of mice. These NK T-cells may be activated by cytokines. 3) Pam2Cys protects the liver against malaria parasite growth at concentrations of 5 nanomoles. While more work needs to be done to explain exactly how Pam2Cys changes the immune system, our research shows that Pam2Cys both kills parasites and prevents infection in the livers of mice.
