Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This project is concerned with whether and how far past Confucian norms and institutions can inform today's East Asian state behavior in a Westphalian world. I published two book chapters with Routledge in spring 2017: one examines Qing China's puzzling inaction to Meiji Japan's absorption of Ryukyu Kingdom as a result of the tribute system's internal change. The other considers Taiwan's inconsistent involvement in China's maritime disputes in the East and South China Seas as being shaped by the historical Confucian world order and the island's colonial legacy.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Although I conducted several expert interviews with my Korean research collaborator in August 2016 and presented our working paper at an international conference in November, we failed to interview Taiwanese diplomats involved in the 1992 derecognition and the hypothesis/argument was not well supported by the empirical materials. Also, I committed myself to several concurrent research projects in FY2016.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I need to refocus on a few Confucian social norms that can better capture the dynamics of South Korea's belated derecognition of Taiwan as well as the concept of emotion. Interview request with Taiwan's representative to South Korea must be rearranged by summer 2017. I will prioritize this sub project and finish paper writing in the second half of the year.

Causes of Carryover |
I had a series of overseas business trips in February and March 2017 and thus I could not use all of the allocated Kaken budget by the specified deadline. I apologize for this poor management and will be more attentive to my use of budget in FY2017.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
I have a list of academic books to purchase in summer 2017, which will easily use up the carried over amount.
