| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I am currently revising a manuscript on Taiwan's inconsistent involvement in China's territorialdisputes in maritime Asia. The manuscript has been solicited by an international academic journal and will be under review shortly. I also published a critical book review of Sheila A. Smith's Intimate Rivals: Japanese Domestic Politics and a Rising China with the Journal of Chinese Political Science (Springer).

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
I and my Korean research collaborator decided to recast our focus on a few Confucian norms and emotion in our study on Seoul's derecognition of Taipei in 1992, and we need to explore relevant empirical materials for the project. Also, I committed myself to
several concurrent research projects in FY2017, which affected the process of research and writing.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I will have lighter teaching load in the second half of AY2018 and will be on research leave in AY2019. This project will be prioritized and I expect to finish paper writing in the first half of AY2019.
