2018 Fiscal Year Annual Research Report

Can "Confucian Diplomacy" Exist in Westphalian International Relations?

Research Project

Project/Area Number 16K21495
Research InstitutionRyukoku University

Principal Investigator

陳 慶昌  龍谷大学, 国際学部, 准教授 (50569788)

Project Period (FY) 2016-04-01 – 2019-03-31
Keywords国際関係論 / 東アジア地域研究 / 朝貢システム / ポストコロニアル / ポストウェストファリア型国際関係論
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This project was concerned with the extent to which pre-Westphalian norms and institutions might shape East Asian state behavior in a Westphalian world and how. Over the course of research, the Principal Investigator realized that his (conventional) constructivist research design and case selection was flawed (anachronistic and still Eurocentric). The project thus took a postcolonial turn and in total produced four book chapters, two book reviews and a journal article (accepted in February 2019), all by internationally renowned publishers.
