Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research analyzed various Japanese historical documents, compared the results with GIS (Geographical Information System) simulations, and conducted fieldworks to calculate the appropriate cost of travel in classical Japan. As a result, the travel calculation in classical Japan became clearer than before.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

既存の歴史地理学的研究では平面的な移動距離とそこから導き出されるコストの算出が中心だった。本研究ではそこに、近年の技術進展により、安価かつ簡易に導入が可能となってきている地理情報システムを導入し、デジタル上で地形を再現してシミュレーションをおこなうとともに、荷重による負荷などを考慮するために実地の歩行実験をおこない、その結果も合わせて考察をおこなった点に意義があった。
