Outline of Final Research Achievements

Based on the reading of the texts, I conducted the following research with the aim of clarifying the aspects of the network of ideas and human relations surrounding utilitarian thinkers through statistical and phylogenetic analysis.
1. To verify the ideological influences between Jeremy Bentham, James and John Stuart Mill, and George Grote, which have been pointed out to date, through digital humanities tools.
2. To visualize the intellectual networks of utilitarian thinkers by conducting through statistical and phylogenetic analysis of the texts of Bentham, the Mills, and Grote.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

人文情報学的なテクスト分析は、それ自体としては必ずしも何らかの思想史上の結論を提示するものではなく、テクスト読解による解釈と組み合わせることによって、初めて思想史研究において意味をもつものになることがほとんどである。したがって、思想史研究において人文情報学的分析が成果を挙げるためには、テクスト読解による成果といかに組み合わせるかが重要になる。この研究は、功利主義研究という思想史研究の一分野での貢献にとどまらず、思想史研究全般における人文情報学的手法の一層の進展に資するとともに、人文情報学の技術的発展に対する思想史研究者の側からの貢献という点でも意義を持っている。
