Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
[1] Two papers were delivered at the ISA Sociology of Religion conference in Toronto: The Opening up of Koyasan in the Age of Globalization: A Study of Temple Lodgings (presentation) and Debating blasphemy: positioning and power dynamics in emotive face-to-face interaction (distributed paper) in July, 2018. [2] Another paper, Blasphemy and dialogue: applying positioning theory to pre-discussion essays and face-to-face interaction on the topic of Ahok’s trial, was also delivered at the July 2018 PALA conference in Birmingham. [3] In addition, a paper has been completed and submitted to Metaphor and the Social World on the analysis of the notion of danger in the dhamma talks of two prominent Thai monks, Buddhadasa Bhikkhu and Ajahn Chah. [4]. The Religion and Language book (edited by Stephen Pihlaja) with a chapter contributed by another member of the kakenhi team has now passed the review process for Cambridge University Press and has a November 2018 deadline for first-draft chapter submissions. [5] A co-authored paper on the potential dangers of modern evangelical interpretations of the Biblical Jericho massacre has now been published in Postscripts: The Journal of Sacred Texts & Contemporary Worlds.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
[1] The collaborative paper, Blasphemy and dialogue: applying positioning theory to pre-discussion essays and face-to-face interaction on the topic of Ahok’s trial has been revised and resubmitted and is still currently under review with the journal Text and Talk.[2] Work has now begun on the chapter for the Religion and Language book alluded to above. [3] A follow-up paper to the Richardson and Nagashima (2018) article which focuses on Jodo Shinshu Buddhism is nearing completion and we are planning to begin the submission process soon. [4] A paper on a debate between Richard Dawkins and John Lennox is nearing completion and the submission process will also begin soon.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We are planning a second follow-up paper to the Richardson and Nagashima (2018) article that will focus on two contrasting Christian authors: Robert Jeffress and Joel Osteen. We also plan to attend the June 2020 RaAM conference in Norway in order to present a paper on the Jodo Shinshu research project. Finally, there is a plan for Stephen Pihlaja to attend the JSS conference this year and meet with us to plan future projects at Hokkaido University.
|
Causes of Carryover |
We were planning to present our findings on our research this year. However, the analysis and writing up stages took longer than we expected, so we have moved our conference presentations to the next academic year.
