| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
[1] The review process has been completed for the paper on the analysis of the notion of danger in the dhamma talks of two prominent Thai monks. [2]. The Religion and Language book (edited by Stephen Pihlaja) is now nearing completion. [3] The collaborative paper, Blasphemy and dialogue: applying positioning theory to pre-discussion essays and face-to-face interaction on the topic of Ahok’s trial has been accepted and published in the journal Text and Talk. [4] A second collaborative paper on a comparison of metaphor usage and patterns of agency in a Christian and Jodo-shinshu text has been submitted. [5] A third collaborative paper involving an analysis of metaphor, force dynamics, and blending in a debate between a prominent atheist and Christian has been submitted to Metaphor and the Social World and is awaiting the results of the review process. [6] A collaborative book proposal with two sample chapters focusing on an introduction to cognitive linguistics and religious language was submitted to Routledge. [7]We have continued our research on the topic of “Opening up of Buddhism” as a sub-team in order to “bring reconciliation and tolerance through inter-religious communications”.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
[1] We are now working on the revisions for the above Cognitive Linguistic Studies paper. [2] Work is now underway to complete the book manuscript alluded to above by the November deadline. [3] Work has begun on a collaborative paper involving an experiment aimed at measuring the profundity of religious statements that are non-metaphorical, metaphorical, or exhibiting a particular type of metaphorical language (where a metaphor is used alongside another metaphor with an opposite meaning). [4] Work has also begun on a collaborative paper designed to test how Japanese participants rate the profundity of religious statements in Japanese, English, and traditional Japanese.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We are now entering the final year of the project, so our future plans are now limited to ensuring that the above projects are completed in a timely manner.

| Causes of Carryover |
Two papers were submitted to two conferences but were not accepted. This resulted in us spending less than the planned amount this year.
As a result of the spread of the covid 19 virus, the list below is tentative and subject to the developing international situation. We plan to purchase sets of corpus data to compare our analyses of collections of religious language with general language. We are planning to present the results of the metaphor and language experiments at the conference in UK.
