Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY 2016, we began to activate the project. First, we began to create a network by compiled the names of scholars working related areas whom we plan to engage, while Wank and Ashiwa visited with scholars in Chinese University of Hong Kong. Secondly, we made visits to possible field sites in Canada and Sri Lanka to visit temples and Buddhist academies with links to Nanputuo Temple and China and conducted preliminary fieldwork there. Thirdly, we made various presentation related to global studies, religion and immigration. Fourthly we published several articles related to the global studies, globalization, religion, and immigration, while Ashiwa and Wank worked on a book manuscript related to the topic

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We were able to activate the project by establishing contact with various scholars working on the same topic, engage in a discussion with scholars at another university, visit possible sites and conduct preliminary field work, as well as publish several relevant articles.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
2017 First half. 1) Wank and Ashiwa will conduct research in Chicago on the 1893 World Parliament of Religions; 2) they complete book manuscript, incorporating findings from the research 2017 Second half. 1) Wank and Ashiwa will conduct fieldwork work at key temples in China and on the Buddhist cultural economy being produced in China’s Minnan region; 2) They will convene workshops at Xiamen University in China and National University of Singapore; 3) They will visit temples related to Nanputuo Temple in Southeast Asia; (4) Farrer will collect data on Chinese migrants related to Buddhism.

Causes of Carryover |
The time spent abroad for research was not as long as planned. Nevertheless, we were able to complete our research objectives for FY 2016

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
We plan to spend more time abroad this year in various parts of Asia and elsewhere. We also plan to invite at least one scholar to come to Japan to discuss our research with us. In addition Wank will be on sabbatical in the fall of 2017 and will spend much of that time abroad.
