Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Our project applies a mixed-method approach consisting of quantitative and qualitative analysis. We have thus far acquired the quantitative dataset titled “2008 Survey of Foreign Graduates Employed in Japanese Companies,” from the Japan Institute of Labor Policy and Training (JILPT). We also cleaned and coded the data, which are now prepared for statistical analyses. We are currently conducting preliminary analyses to examine our research questions on the benefits and conflicts of diversity in the workplace.
We are making progress on our qualitative analysis. Specifically, we conducted interviews with human resource specialists in Japanese corporations to gain insight into the current state of diversity. We are also collecting data from international students in Japan, regarding their experiences of finding jobs in Japan.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We are moving according to schedule. Hilary Holbrow visited Tokyo in early 2017, which gave us the opportunity to discuss and brainstorm our plan and to ensure that the project will progress on schedule, as well as to conduct qualitative interviews with HR personnel at Japanese firms. In addition, we have acquired a dataset from JILPT, and have begun analyzing it to test our hypotheses. We will continue to prioritize data collection as this is key to our project.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We expect to complete a draft of a paper using the 2008 Survey of Foreign Graduates Employed in Japanese Companies by January 2018. We will submit this paper to the Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association.
We are also in the process of acquiring large-scale data from a U.S. based non-profit organization which collected comparative data on gender diversity and inclusion in 7 countries, including Japan. We are currently processing documents to request access, and are hopeful that the data will become available later this year.

Causes of Carryover |
We did not use up all of our allocated budget for 2016 because of reduced travel. We also did not have to use up any personnel costs as we were able to take care of many of the data cleaning procedures ourselves.

We will coordinate a meeting between the two researchers during academic year 2017, which will require travel funds. We also anticipate personnel costs for cleaning and preparation of newly acquired data.
