Research Abstract |
Studies of spontaneous mutations occurring in E. coli cells grown under a strict anaerobic condition revealed that oxygen radicals are a major cause of spontaneous mutations occurring in aerobically growing cells. In particular, hotspot-type of base substitutions appeared to be caused by oxygen radicals. We also found a mutagenic pathway caused by superoxide and one caused by nucleotide excision repair.
