Research Abstract

本研究は、遺伝子・分子レベルの網羅的な解析から、細胞・個体・生態系レベルでの生命システムの全体像を明らかにすることを目指し、新しい情報技術の開発とともに、新しいタイプの基盤データベースを構築することを目的とする。細胞・個体レベルでの生命システム情報は、これまでのKEGGにおいてすでにデータベース化が行われているので、本研究では生物種間相互作用や環境との相互作用といったより高次レベルの生命システム情報をゲノムの情報と統合し、医療や産業をはじめ、ゲノム情報の有効利用へつなぐ基盤データベースを構築している。
平成20年度の成果は以下の通りである。1. ゲノム情報を蓄積したKEGG GENESデータベース構築とオーソロググループKOの体系化を継続して行い、外部用の自動アノテーションサーバーKAASに加えて、内部用のアノテーション自動化システムであるKOALAを新規に開発し、急増するゲノム数に対応できる体制を整備した。2. ケミカル情報を蓄積したKEGG LIGANDデータベース構築を継続して行い、酵素命名委員会との連携を強化した。反応に伴う化学構造変化(RDM)パターンに基づく酵素番号予測システム(e-zyme)の新バージョンを提供し、遺伝子発現データから糖鎖構造を予測するシステム(GECS)を公開した。3. KEGGを個別目的にカスタマイズして利用できる環境作りとして、各ユーザーがKEGGに対する検索や解析を自分のプログラムに組み込んで利用できるようKEGG APIの開発も継続して行った。4. 支援活動として、基盤ゲノム領域及び他のゲノム領域に対して、ゲノムデータやESTデータの機能アノテーションなど、本研究の成果を生かした支援を行った。また、幅広い研究者を対象としたデータベース利用講習会およびKEGG API入門コース等を開催した。本研究の成果はhttp://www.genome.jp/kegg/で公開している。
