Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study was development of a fundamental database system for outcome researches of TBI (traumatic brain injury) rehabilitation. The research was designed for long-term follow up of the patients with TBI, and the project was approved by the institutional Ethics Committee. In March 2007, The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Database (BiRD) was started on a local area network Connecting Tsukigase rehabilitation center and Keio University Hospital. Our online system is based on a world-wide-web network application of the File Maker Pro Version 5, which enables all the clients to direct registration of the database running on the main server. The BiRD consisted with 144 items including the. Functional Independence Measure, which is one of the most popular evaluating scales for ADL, and each data is rewritable through Common Gateway Interface programs. Fifty-six patients (male 30/ female 26, mean age 54.2 years) have been registered all this time. Those TBI patients who have memory disturbance or inattention are disabled and handicapped socially nevertheless of their intact motor functions. Importance of comprehensive medical care through the cooperation of members of a rehabilitation team was demonstrated.
