Research Abstract |
This research project intends to identify the impact of the media development on structural changes of the society of Sub-Saharan Africa after 1990's. For this purpose, the project is executed under the partnership with African researchers in several African countries including French speaking ones. It's most important themes were, among others, the history of modern media, their interaction with social change focusing on political and economic liberalizations, conflict and development. The project targeted the press, the radio, the TV and the ICT including mobile phone as the category of media, and excluded traditional ones, oral and chirographic. The main findings are following : -After liberalization in 1990's, media have played increasing role in political process. -Media liberalization does not go ahead and its speed and depth depend on the power balance between the state and the civil society -Once the media liberalized, media have increased their numbers, multiplied their categories

and expand their reach -Development of the media has increased the volume of information without narrowing the information gap between rich-poor, urban-rural -For further development of the media, necessary elements are thoroughgoing and irreversible liberalization, promotion of ethics and professionalism, enabling environment for media industry. -Today, the role of media become more visible not only in political field but in other sphere especially development one -And the media have began to influence the behavior of ordinary people This project has proved that the role of the information and the media have been rapidly growing in socio-economic development in Africa. It will contribute to the more comprehensive African studies that integrate the media and the information as essential elements in political, economic or socio-cultural development.
