Research Abstract

This research proposes new two types of electromagnetic valve actuator for automobile engine. The first proposed actuator uses permanent magnet (PM) in the middle of actuator stems vertically. In addition the electromagnets are installed in the both sides of the actuator. This idea reduces the driving power drastically than the conventional solenoid type one. The experimental results showed the effectiveness of variable valve operation. The actuator is installed on the inlet valve of the test engine and homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion was tested. But there were problems with the limited variable of valve timing and the weak robustness of the temperature change. To achieve further miniaturization and high-speed drive, a new actuator was designed. The redesigned actuator was fabricated and tested. The results showed the extended variable range of valve timing than the previous one. Next, completely new construction of actuator was proposed addition to the re-designed one. This is called High Density (HD) type actuator. The actuator is designed using the FEM analysis and fabricated. The experimental results showed higher speed, but the driving energy becomes greater. Also the robustness and the reliability has some problems which should be solved in the near future.
