Research Abstract

In this study a new device with hardening type hysteresis is proposed, combining fluid damper and displacement controller. This system is effective to control the response of buildings when it is installed in the structures. Two major objectives are described in the following.
1. To develop a dual design method to improve habitability under a moderate earthquake and prevent the spread of damage under severe earthquake:
In this system when subjected to a moderate earthquake, installed damper consuming energy decreases the response of buildings and improves the habitability. When subjected to a severe earthquake, the displacement controller restrains excessive story displacement while fluid damper consumes energy. This means that the building structure is change from the seismic control system with fluid damper to the normal earthquake resistant system with stiff braces. 2. To develop a design method to control the response story displacement of a building under severe earthquake:
In this system when subjected to severe earthquake, the displacement controller restrains excessive story displacement of the building and controls the distribution of story displacement as designed one. Using this system, unified distribution of story displacement can be obtained by restraining excessive local displacements caused by the irregularity of stiffness and / or strength distribution in a building or the contribution of higher modes. In this study the design method is proposed to calculate necessary damper quantity by energy response, equalizing input energy from earthquake and consuming energy by structures and damper at design displacement level. The effectiveness of this design method is verified by shaking table tests installed in Tohoku University and furthermore investigated by analyses for reinforced concrete buildings considering various conditions such as the distribution of stiffness and / or strength and earthquake characteristics.
