| Research Abstract |
We have done several researches on maritime traditions in the Philippines, Taiwan and Okinawa. Especially, the aspects we have examined are fishing technology, boat-building technology, social practice (e.g. ritual related to fishing), indigenous recognition of maritime environment (e.g. wind names, fish names), and folk tales related to the sea (e.g. creation of islands, tsunami legends, etc.):
(1) Research of indigenous fishing technology, boats (outrigger fishing boats and bamboo rafts), social practice, legends in Ilocos and Kagayan (Luzon) and Visayas (Panay Island): August and September, 2005 and 2006 (Goto, Tawa, Sugii)
(2) Research of indigenous boats and legends among Amis and Puyuma tribes in Taiwan: September, 2005 and 2006 (Goto).
(3) Research of indigenous wind names on Miyakojia Island: August, 2006 (Shimura).
(4) Research of maritime legends in Yaeyama and Miyako: December, 2005 and 2006 (Goto), February, 2005 and 2006 (Maruyama).
(5) Research of indigenous boat building in Okinawa: January to March, 2006 (Goto and a collaborator Osamu Monden).
Final reports include each participant's report or papers on these maritime traditions in the three areas. A DVD on indigenous boat-building in Okinawa is also attached to our final report.
