Research Abstract |
This research describes how to mount a new pointing device by which PC users, who have difficulty in capturing Graphical User Interface (GUI) images, can effectively access the information resources on Personal Computer (PC). The operation and the visibility decrease with ages even in the case of the user who is experienced in the operations of information appliances. We propose the system wearing the operation lens support, which is called "OPR-LENS(Operation-Lens)". The OPR-LENS system is composed of the OPR-LENS module and the OPR-LENS device, and mounted on the server and the viewer software connected via TCP/IP, respectively. The OPR-LENS device forms a temple block suitable for a palm operation. Users' manipulation can be effectively supported by the effect of the spherical lens with the partial GUI image. zation of the easy userinterface that is not intrusive and a leisurely manipulation. Furthermore, a method for evaluating the effects of visual support is discussed. Although we had evaluated the performance of the OPR-LENS pointing device, we had not made a quantitative evaluation of its visual-enhancement capabilities, called visual support. To evaluate visual support, we compared the methods for evaluating the performance of pointing and pen devices. We determined that using the steering wheel measurement, which uses detailed handling, is effective for measuring the value of visual support for the user. The evaluation of the effects of visual support was better for the elderly than for young people. Additionally, we investigated the differences in the effect of the visual support based on occupation and experience of the elderly. The results showed that steady manipulation of the OPR-LENS device was independent of user operations. Further, this research describes how the steering wheel measurement is effective. Less
