Research Abstract

In this 10-year-study we investigated the influence of habitual exercise on bone mineral density and bone turnover in perimenopausal women. Bone mineral density began to drop in premenopause but the decrease ratio was larger in control group than exercise group. The result suggested that habitual exercise could suppress the decrease of bone mineral density after menopause. The effects of habitual exercise on aerobic capacity of middle-aged female distance runners were examined using analysis of covariance structures. We revealed that training distance and female sex hormones were related significantly to the decrease of maximal oxygen uptake with age. We investigated the effects of a 12-wk combined resistance training and walking on bone quality in poslmenopausal women. Broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) increased significantly during static training program period. Speed of sound (SOS) decreased significantly during static training program period but increased significantly during dynamic training program period. These results suggested that 12-wk combined resistance training and walking might be suitable for postmenopausal women by increasing BUA and maintaining SOS. Precedent 12-wk resistance training could be effective, in increasing SOS. We examined the timing of recovery of high-frequency (HF) component of heart rate variability (HRV) immediately after exercise using frequency analysis of HRV. It was suggested that the timing of HF recovery after exercise in younger and older groups could be influenced not only by aging, but also by other factors, including the characteristics of the subjects of the current study. However, the detection of timing of HRV recovery despite the duration of sharp change in HR indicated that HRV was an effective evaluation technique for determination of autonomic nervous activity immediately after exercise.
