Research Abstract

The authors investigated the characteristics of mathematical abilities of the students of Hachinohe National College of Technology (HNCT) by comparing with high school and college students from the eleventh graders to sophomores.
In 2005 we conducted the examinations of mathematical problems. In 2006 we asked how much extent the students understood the mathematical contents they learned.
We found that the students of HNCT understand high school mathematics less than high school and college students. This result has been expected by the authors. We also found that the abilities of HNCT's students were not lower than those of college students on college mathematics. This result was not certain before the survey was conducted.
We could not detect whether HNCT's students are good at calculations or they are not good at theoretical analysis.
