| Research Abstract |
The purpose of this project is to research and analyze interactively, how 'Japan' was depicted in German literature and 'Germany' in Japanese literature.
Such an interactive view could be valued as especially original in this field, as there have never been sufficient contacts between researches of "Study of German/Japanese Literature" in Japan and "Japan Studies" in German speaking countries.
There are three results of this project to be expected.
1. Related books and materials are collected and classified, in order to establish a literature list. At this point there are not enough data available to establish such a database. We would like to continue collecting further data.
2. Literary materials from the 19th century to the 21st century will be researched. With this interactive approach we can clear the relationship of cultural influences. For example, the Japanese New Theater Movement ('Shingeki-Undou') embraced western Modernism, which in itself was already influenced by the Japanese traditional theater. The German Haiku developed itself originally and was imported to Japan, influencing Japanese modern poetry and contributing to Japanese Modernism. Zen, which was received in German speaking countries as Western Mysticism, was in Japan newly recognized as typical Japanese culture.
Each member of our research team has in the past reported in seminars and published academic papers or a books about these results.
3. We could visit Japanese culture centers, libraries and universities in German speaking counties or libraries and literary houses in Japan, so that we would not only collect materials, but also deepen the exchange to researchers in these institutions.
