| Research Abstract |
The verb desire' which was borrowed from Old French during the Middle English period has been extensively analyzed
Based on various corpora. The analysis shows that the verb desire' which was frequent in Middle English has come to be less frequent over time possibly under the pressure of the verb 'want'. This study was presented at the The Asscociation of University Professors of English held in Lund University (Sweden) in 2007.
Of basic French verbs, the verb of communication 'permettre' has been studied based on electronic corpora. The study shows that there are constructional differences between human and non-human subjects in terms of permission. That is, the construction where the nonhuman subject expresses 'actualized possibility' is more frequent than the construction where the human subject with more constraint expresses 'permission'.
